Polar Ice Experiment

Materials:

  1. Large blocks of ice
  2. Coarse salt
  3. Food coloring
  4. Eye droppers
  5. One gallon milk cartons

Directions:

  1. Cut off the top of a milk carton.
  2. Pour water in empty milk carton. Freeze.
  3. Remove the cardboard from the milk container once water is frozen.
  4. Place ice blocks on trays covered with several layers of newspaper.
  5. Sprinkle coarse salt on top of the ice blocks.
  6. Drip various colors of food coloring on top of the ice block - tunnels of color are created as the salt melts through the ice block.
  7. Put the colorful ice blocks outside. If cold enough- they should stay frozen for several days.
