The Doorway's a Stage!

Materials:

  1. spring-tension curtain rod to fit a doorway
  2. old sheet, tablecloth, beach towel, or shower curtain
  3. scissors
  4. sewing machine (optional, for adults)
  5. rubber bands, ribbon, or string
  6. items to decorate (optional)
  7. newspapers
  8. fabric pens
  9. glue paints (tacky glue + tempera paints mixed together)
  10. paintbrushes

Directions:

  1. Cut the sheet (or tablecloth, etc) to twice the width of a door.
  2. If desired, sew a simple casing along the top edge to fit the tension rod.
  3. Otherwise, you can drape the sheet over the rod.
  4. If you wish to decorate the curtain, cover a table with newspapers.
  5. Spread the fabric on the papers.
  6. Decorate with glue paints and fabric pens.
  7. Fabric pens work well for outlines. Fill in with paintbrushes and glue paint.
  8. Dry completely.
  9. Hang the curtain on the tension rod in a doorway.
  10. Let puppeteers crawl behind the curtain and put on a show!
  11. To store, release the tension in the rod and roll fabric around the rod.
  12. Tie into place with a rubber band, ribbon, or string. Slip onto a shelf or closet until needed again.
